FDA Investigating Dog Treats From China
If you are like many dog owners that give their pets chicken jerky treats, you may want to rethink giving that savory treat. Pet Owners are taking a stand that many of these
treats imported from China are harming or killing beloved pets.
Complaints on these imported treats are nothing new, in 2007 and 2008 reports of sick dogs were also recorded. The FDA issued a recent cautionary update on November 2011. Complaints from pet owners are still being received today that consumption of imported chicken jerky treats are causing illness or even death to their pets.
Signs to watch for if your dog has consumed Chicken Jerky Treats:

• decrease in appetite
• decrease in activity
• vomiting
• diarrhea (may contain blood)
• increased water consumption
• increased urination
These signs may occur within hours to days of feeding the product.
If your dog shows any of these signs, stop feeding these treats.
Consult your veterinarian if signs are severe or persist more than 24 hours.
Blood tests may indicate kidney failure and urine tests may show increased glucose levels.
If your pet has suffered an illness believed to be associated with pet food, complaints and samples of the products can be sent to the FDA for testing.
The FDA continues to investigate the problem and its origin but currently all testing
has come back inconclusive. This is why imported chicken jerky treats are still available to consumers.
The FDA urges pet owners to use caution with regard to any chicken jerky products.
